Canterbury Kids' Coach
led by Louise Weller
Reaching children and their families in the streets where they live
What do you do?
We run a 20 week programme on board a bus, in which we make crafts, play games, sing songs, and learn to pray (all of these have a particular theme). We also provide a life skill programme, teach puppetry, drama, and cooking, and even learn how to play the ukulele! Refreshments are given, and meals at the end of each term. We carry out visits and follow up work, to help address neglect, truancy and abuse and often meeting material needs as well. This is much more than just a bus!
It is bringing church to the people!
Why does it happen?
We want to see lives transformed and communities grow. I [Louise] didn't have an opportunity as a child to hear about Jesus, so I had to struggle alone during my tough teenage years. Consequently I desperately want others to have opportunities to hear about, experience and grow in the love of Jesus, and be equipped to reach their full potential. We work alongside other agencies and community groups in the area and value the opportunity to work in partnership.

Where does is happen?
In Rowley, a financially challenged suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. We operate there because of the extreme need and poverty of spirit as well as financial need. Experience has taught that the programme is more effective in financially challenged suburbs.

When does it happen?
After school on board the bus, on Tuesdays, (Hendersons Rd), Wednesdays (McCarthy St) and Thursdays, (Tankerville St) and on Friday afternoons at Rowley Resource Centre. Young people meet on Friday nights at the Weller's and on Sunday nights at The Loft at St Martins Anglican Church 50 Lincoln Rd.
“Canterbury Kids Coach is the most effective street level outreach programme operating in a low decile area that I've seen in New Zealand,”
- Captain Phil Clark, National Director of Church Army New Zealand.

For this ministry to happen, we need your help!
Donations are welcome, and please don't hesitate to ask how we can help YOU!
